Do you use natural ingredients?
All of the ingredients that go into our products – the herbs, oils, butters, essential oils, emulsifiers, and preservatives – are high quality and organic (or organically grown) where possible. We made a decision when we founded Jillian’s Apothecary that we would not use synthetic fragrances or emulsifiers (used in lotion to make it creamy and light), and that our preservatives would be as natural as possible (preservatives are used in lotion and scrubs to keep them from spoiling). Quality and trust is important to us.
Do you use natural preservatives?
Our preservatives are on the highly reputable Whole Foods Acceptable Premium Preservative List. They don’t contain parabens, and are not formaldehyde donors, meaning they don’t break down and release formaldehyde into the product after it is produced and bottled.
To identify our preservatives when you read our labels, look for these terms: Lactobacillus Ferment or Phenoxyethanol.
Our Lactobacillus Ferment natural antimicrobial system is 100% natural and is probiotic based. This preservative is used in all of our lotions and creams.
Phenoxyethanol is a synthetically produced preservative made to mimic a natural compound found in green tea. Although it’s a synthetic preservative, it has been found to be safe at low levels. Like the Lactobacillus Ferment, it’s included on the Whole Foods Acceptable Premium Preservative List. We use it in our body and foot scrubs.
Do your fragrances contain phthalates?
No. Phthalates are chemicals that are used in products across many industries, and are often found in skin care and fragrances. Our fragrances are pure essential oils. We don’t use fragrance oil, which can contain phthalates, in any of our products. Research about the effects of phthalates on our bodies is ongoing, but some people try to minimize their exposure to the chemicals because of concerns about cancer and reproductive health.
BTW, to pronounce “phthalate,” say this grammatically incorrect sentence first, then model the word phthalate on “shall ate,” using a th sound instead of an sh sound at the beginning: They shall ate the cake off the plate.
Do your products contain gluten?
Our customers who are sensitive to gluten know that Vitamin E is sometimes made from wheat. Vitamin E is present in many of our products, and our supplier assures us that it does not contain any gluten.
Why do you put herbs in every product?
We infuse every product with herbal blends because we have seen how much of a difference herbs can make. The right herbs can make a lotion or lip balm feel more moisturizing, and can help a salve to make your skin feel less irritated.
What’s the difference between a cream and salve, especially if they contain the same herbs?
Some of our products contain the same herbs but have different applications.
A lotion or cream is fantastic when it’s used under clothing or on a large area of skin.
A salve or balm is a wax and oil based product that is great for small areas, or for very dry skin.
I don’t see a product on your website, but I would love it if you made it!
Tell us about it! We may have it in the works, and if we don’t, we may consider it. Contact us and share your wishes.
How long will it take for my order to ship?
We keep all items in stock. Packages will usually ship the following business day. If there is a delay because of our manufacturing schedule, we’ll send an email to let you know.
What shipping carrier do you use?
We ship all packages through the US Postal Service. We find that the rates are the best for the type of packages we ship, and we pass the savings directly to you.
First Class shipping time is 2-5 days. Priority Mail is 1-3 days.
Do you offer Express Shipping?
Yes. Simply select the Express Shipping option when you check out. Note that orders usually ship the following business day. If there is a delay because of our manufacturing schedule, we’ll send an email to let you know. If you need a product right away, feel free to contact us before you place your order.
Will I receive a tracking number when my item ships?
Absolutely! When your package is ready for the post office, we send an email to let you know. It contains the USPS tracking number. Please note that the USPS website is sometimes slow to scan the package into the system, even after it is already on their truck, headed to a central sorting facility.
I live nearby. Do you have a store? Can I pick up my order?
Local pickup and delivery is always an option.
We don’t have a store. My husband Jeff and I operate Jillian’s Apothecary out of our historic home in Galway, NY, and our lab and manufacturing space is here along with our offices.
You are more than welcome to arrange a time to stop at our front door and pick up your order. In addition, as a mom of school-age children, I spend a fair amount of time driving around. We can arrange to meet somewhere.
When you place your order on our website, you might see the shipping option “Free Local Pickup.” Select this and I’ll be in touch with you. If you don’t see Free Local Pickup on the shipping list, contact me and we’ll make it happen!
